Yes, my play tends to commit to hanging onto the midpoint for a while and thus playing on our side (giving up a point to fill in the board). The near unanimous 13/7 usually does the opposite -- give up the mid (presumably safetying that remaining checker) but being allowed to keep the blocking points and using those two (previous) midpoint checkers as buiders.
This is a very common theme -- the farther back a point is the less timing you have (when you keep it, that is). It's especially noticeable (and dangerous) to hold the 18-point vs. opponent's 13-point if you don't have the timing to go along with it.
