I strongly prefer not using dice cups and most of my opponents agree once they try it. A few insist they like the feel of shaking the dice, and that's fine with me too, but several forget to roll through the box, which is something that never gets by me, so it's not a problem.
As you said, once people get used to it, it's not a problem.
I have tried setting the dice carefully on the baffle by hand and recorded hundreds of rolls to see if I could actually affect how the dice come out. I know it had been done by someone in Los Angeles years ago, but those dice boxes were very inferior with just a few metal rods for the dice to hit and they could be missed.
You really don't need cups. Especially when you play speed gammon, using a box without cups is bar far the fastest and most efficient way to roll and you can be assured of a fair roll.
I sold out of boxes in Monte Carlo and the TD borrowed two from me during the tournament to use for players who had a problem with the way their opponent was rolling. It just solves a lot of problems.
