How do you remember the counts? Quick Straw poll..

I consistently have troubles remembering intermediate numbers, subtotal, etc. when I am counting. I have been playing with the major mnemonic system as an effective way to hold the numbers in my head.

What methods do you use? Natural memory, brute force repetition? Peg system? Something else?
