It doesn't appear as though the answers so far addressed your problem, unless I misunderstand one or both.
I also use the American Sign Language finger technique (which I think was developed back in the 1800's), so even the old people here can't legitimately claim to have 'created' it) to store one side's count after I've finished it and before I count the other side.
If you use your fingers for intermediate numbers, subtotal, etc. then what do you do with the full one-side count while you tally the other, use your toes?
So, is what you are asking refer to the running total as you count a single side? E.g. "six on the 6-point is 36, five on the 5-point is 25, added to... wait, I forgot my intermediate value...!"
And just be be clear and avoid an unnecessary lecture, there are better ways to do a raw count than adding up the checkers on each point. I only used this example to attempt to discern what exactly you are asking.
