In your alternative position, you can play for White to crack, so you don't want to clear the 5 and 6 as quickly as possible.
Getting ready to clear the 5 and 6 is the safest in terms of not getting hit. I think so much has been proven by bot calculations (Woolsey, long ago?), assuming that the other side has infinite timing, that a hit is a win for your opponent (or alternatively, that the overriding goal is to avoid getting hit) and that gammons and backgammons do not matter. Usually other things come into play, but Phil's position is sufficiently close.
