Possibly "shot blasting" is the British term -- sure sounds like it ought to be the same thing. E.g. you shot blast perspex and we bead blast acrylic. :)

Go ahead and get the cool glasses. They will cause enough intimidation of your opponents to pay for themselves, even if they don't help see the dice better (through your internet connection).
