A major issue is whether the sample size is fair and representative. Many matches in the public domain have been recorded and transcribed by the players themselves or by close friends. In such cases, players are often content to share matches the played well in but not those they played poorly in. Similarly, in many cases, the recorder out of courtesy asks his opponent if it is acceptable to share with the public, but the opponent declines (or says I would rather you didn't if it's not a problem, or some such). This I commonly called "cherry picking".

Iancho's database, The Mochy Club, the German CBiD club and BMAB adopt control procedures in order to try to eradicate cherry picking.
