Yesterday I made a pretty big mistake deciding not to play a tempo hit play:
I thought it looked too wild but it turned out to be the thing to do. Today I had to make a training track to cover this kind of situation:
Tempo hitter! Sometimes a tempo hit is your best bet! About to be blitzed into oblivion? Any hit is a good hit!
I struggled a little bit coming up with a good definition that would cover these types of positions but I think the one I ended up with is reasonable. Hitting on the ace or deuce point while having a 1 point board seems reasonable but doesn't cover all such positions (including the one I ran into).
If you try the new training track "Tempo hitter" and come across a position that you don't think fits the bill of a tempo hit please let me know and I'll see if I'm able to refine the definition.
The opposite of finding a position that is a tempo hit position but Backgammon Studio doesn't identify is as such is a bit more tricky. You would have to go to your private database and then find a move and check the tags section. Here you'll see a 'Tempo_hit_or_not' tag if it is considered a tempo hit position.
Importing some xgp files from your collection of 'tempo hit' positions could do the trick. This requires a couple of extra steps. Let me know if you want to try and I'll give you some extra tips!
Another mistake I did yesterday also ended up as another action tag 'Hit, Point and Slot or not'. I got a bit greedy and wanted to close out my opponent a bit too quickly and hit a blot in my board, covered the blot and slotted the next point but hit and cover was a much better plan.
I guess that could also be called an overplay but that term is a bit too generic.
