Maybe this is a useful perspective. At 2a-3a, making the anchor leads if things go well to positions were the cube has value for Blue. This is not the case for the hit. Making the anchor leads to positions with few gammon losses - not the case for the hit. The combination of these two benefits outweigh the value of the additional gammon wins from the hit.

In general, at 2a-3a, play is moderately GS-ish.
