I hadn't heard.

Shortly after I learned how to play backgammon and had read Backgammon (widely hailed as the bible of the game), I happened to be in Manhattan and once visited the Mayfair, where Paul Magriel kindly schooled me for $5 a point. It was the first of countless times over the decades that Paul greatly impressed me with his vast knowledge and natural ability to articulate.

Fast forward to last decade, when he consented to write the foreword to Backgammon Openings. Paul Weaver and I will be eternally grateful.

Paul Magriel had a well-established talent for many games. An anagrammist might say in this regard that he had a plural image.
