Nearly four years on, I can answer that.

At the time, I had a feeling I'd probably read it in one of Chris Bray's earlier articles in 'The Independent', but could not locate my collection of these cuttings. During a sort out last week they turned up; I certainly wasn't looking for them! It was in an article of his which seems to be in the Saturday 22nd February 1997 edition. I say that because I just took cuttings of the articles themselves, writing the date on the back; but this date is almost certainly correct. In an article extolling the virtues of Paul Magriels book, he wrote, at the end of the opening paragraph:

"X-22 is Magriel's nickname, coined after his propensity for splitting to his opponent's 3-point early in the game."
