Take a look at the opening book results for 64. Look at the stats for games won and gammons won.

Making the 2 point wins more gammons but loses more games. It is the attacking play but not the priming play. There is nothing to choose at 'normal' scores but it is the clear winner at gammon go.

So, two entirely different game plans. Only from the priming point of view can it be seen as 'burying checkers'. In the blitz, each inner point is almost of the same value.
