It does prevent him from putting a checker on his 12 point if he rolls an ace but that seems marginally important.

I see this as very important, he'll rip down builders from the mid or spring his back checker and you won't get a shot at it if you abandon the mid. Then he'll have complete outfield control. Bringing one down with an ace is important in my opinion, adding a lot of point making/outfield controlling numbers. If he is able to make any points in the outfield, it need not be the bar, it can be the 9 or 10 pt. putting pressure on the 4 pt. or the 11 or 12 pt. simply restricting your running numbers and giving him a double shot when you do try to pop out.
