Seeding players according to the Calcutta prices

In the early days of tournament backgammon this seems to have been quite usual.

Lee Genud, world champion 1981, writes in her book (Lee Genud’s backgammon book, see

https://archive.org/details/leegenudsbackgam00gen_9jx/page/146/mode/1up ) on page 146:

“The Calcutta may provide a method of seeding the players based on who was auctioned off for the highest amounts.”

And a few pages earlier (page 143, https://archive.org/details/leegenudsbackgam00gen_9jx/page/143/mode/1up )

“Byes […] They may be given randomly by a draw or the players may be “seeded” (the best players) based on their ability to play or based on the amount they are sold for in an auction if you choose to run a Calcutta […]”
