Allocating byes to seeded players – as it is done at tennis tournaments – was common practice in the early days of backgammon tournaments: Just a few examples:
At the US Open 1977 byes were awarded according to the Calcutta prices (see https://eafeb888-7d28-4fee-bbda-1a78a6543e4e.filesusr.com/ugd/41dc1e_192e7ffd243b44b9943b6e9146d37d72.pdf )
At the World championship 1979 (see https://eafeb888-7d28-4fee-bbda-1a78a6543e4e.filesusr.com/ugd/41dc1e_53f89a9ae4ab46d68cf1e16e3c9f2a43.pdf page 8), a seeding committee decided upon the seeds and “Any byes will be allocated to the seeded players in order.”
Many thanks to Ms Candace Mayeron from http://www.gammonassociateswest.com/ for providing a lot of backgammon memorabilia, from which the above examples are taken from (to be found under “more…” in the title line of the homepage). When browsing through these old tournament brochures you will find many more examples.
However, although I would not generally object seeding, I think allocating byes to seeded players goes a step too far: As far as byes are concerned I strictly think that all players should have equal chances.
