Art Grater: Average players are less likely to keep attending tournaments if they keep getting knocked out early, or think they're more likely to face a seed in the final.

This is it here. Nothing else really matters. Whether that perception is true or not, anything you do that turns off average players is HORRIBLE for backgammon.
