I don't think awarding the byes to lower ranked players would draw anyone to the tournament who wasn't going to be there already either. Also, I don't know offhand of any other game/sport where the lower ranked players would be awarded the bye. This is particularly unappealing when we don't even have a definite way to rank players.

As for auctioning off the bye(s), I hate this idea. Advancing, winning the main tournament, ABT points, etc... should never be heavily influenced by who has the most money to throw at it. Nobody bother bringing up rebuys. It's not the same.
