How about treating every one in the event the same?

You would need to balance the effects of those leaving. All of a sudden the lower level players who have already been in the open for a few tournaments would have less equity. Additionally it seems to be objectionable to a fair number of better players (whom you seem to see as being short-sighted).

But maybe I have not thought this through: If you get enough of them to leave I guess the problem of the low level player goes away. Then many many more of the intermediates will move up. With much greater attendance sponsorship and especially the big TV money will appear. Then those players return and everyone is better off. Maybe there is something to this?
