Doubling help

Like I said in another thread, I'm relatively new to competitive backgammon, and over the board I really am not sure when to double, and when to take/drop. The obvious decisions I can see easily, but is there any kind of rule of thumbs on when to double or when to take?

I've read some books and they talk about market value and that you should double when you are between a 64%-78% favorite, but i'm not sure on how to look at a position yet and say oh... i'm a 62% favorite to win here. What I'm looking for is something like "you have an x point board and y runners behind a z prime, that's a good spot to double"

I try to play dozens of games against GNU and am using the tutor mode for cube decisions. So when it stops me and tells me when to double I try and study the position, pip count, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Darin
