The safe play would be 8/3, 5/3. If White had 14 checkers in his/her board, then that would be my play, since I expect to win unless I get hit.

Here White has six checkers borne off. Now simply avoiding getting hit doesn't win as many games. The safe play may allow Blue to bear off one or two checkers without opening his board, but either a six or a five will force Blue to open a point (and further, only take off one checker).

Obviously there is a point where it's better to play safe than to maximize the bearoff. It might have already happened -- i.e. maybe Blue is better off playing safe even here. (If Blue bears off one and opens his/her board, it's 14 crossovers to 13, plus White being on the bar means s/he may not be able to use the dice at all.)

My gut feeling is that it's right to take a checker off with the 6-2, risking the shot+hit next turn. But I don't have an algorithm for it.
