I've thought about this and I wonder if the reasoning is really sound. Your assertion here is of course correct, but what matters is how erroneous your opponent's play will be overall, not just on the next roll. It's my anecdotal impression that average players tend to make more mistakes when they are significantly behind in the pip count. When you're behind in the pip count, you generally have to make lots of tricky decisions (safe-vs-bold, running off an anchor or not, assessing your timing, taking or passing tough cubes, etc.). Other things being equal, I would be inclined to pick the play that increases my opponent's chances of fanning. Fanning is also more likely to make people frustrated or steamed.

Do you not find this to be the case?
