In Response To: About Cash Play tournament format (Daniel Murphy)

Daniel, you write: "The first rebuy simply has to be positive EV, doubling starting chips but only increasing the buy-in by 50%."

Now I might be wrong, but this looks like the kind of assumption that denies itself; a very short and simple explaination is as follows:

Let's assume rebuying DOES increase equity, and this opinion is so widely shared that EVERYONE in the tournament rebuys once at the very beginning...

Under my calculation, everyone's equity (before starting any game) would equal to Buy-in + Rebuy, or 1080 € net positive equity, cet par.

In this (likely) scenario, I still don't see why the rebuy would generate positive equity (apart from the extra money spent).

Let's now assume some players decide to delay their option to rebuy for a few games (and we also assume these players would keep waiting until their stack gets closer to 5000 chips)

Do you still think those players are losing equity by not rebuying?

Agreed, 2500 chips for half the price looks cheap and appealing for the equity-hungry, but if a player has gained a lot of chips on the first Level, he might consider 360€ spent for 2500 extra chips as negative equity.

And I'm convinced such scenario can (and will) occur.

So again, please forgive me, but I don't think it's right to assume that first rebuy is automatic.

In fact, what seems to be relevant to answer the 'Rebuy or Not' question is merely the size of the prize-pool, or the expectation that can be made of it.

Actually, further in your post, you do say that "both a first and second rebuy will likely prove valuable" "Likely" is the key word here..

and you are right that a better comparison to poker would be a Limit game.

My experience as TD makes me guess that most players that were lucky enough to gain a lot of points in the first 2 Levels will NOT rebuy. (but likely ADD-ON, I give you that).

About Pairings, sorry I missed your comment, which is nicely observed; I posted a comment on this, but clearly the pairings bring a delicate decision to make for the format.
