Cubeless matches?

Is there anywhere in the world, now or in the past, where serious tournament matches with cubeless backgammon are or have been held? Since I've never seen a cubeless MET I assume the answer is no, at least today, but surely in the past there must have been backgammon tournaments without doubling cubes.

It is interesting to think about what cubeless matches would be like. Offhand it's not clear to me whether cubeless matches would be stronger or weaker tests of skill than "standard" backgammon, when normalized per unit time. Cube skill would be eliminated, but a long match could not end in just one game either. METs and estimates of absolute gammon chances and winning chances would still be needed for accurate checker play.
