Cubeless matches?

My guess is that it was the introduction of the doubling cube which stimulated tournaments so there may not have been cubeless tournaments. If you search "backgammon" on Google news and look at the 1932 to 1939 archive, you can read about high society tournaments.
I think Bill Davis is most likely to know the answer.
