This is an interesting debate. It does seem very unlikely to me that when the rules were written, the intent was to say, "If a player wishes to point out an illegal move, then the player optionally picks up the dice, and then..." This gives a hustler an opportunity for a shot at a timid player. The hustler, knowing that the play was perfectly legal, picks up the dice, and then claims that the roll was something else. The timid opponent is persuaded that he misread the dice and adjusts the play.
Assuming the rule gets rewritten, it seems clear to me that picking up the dice ought to condone the illegal play.
