Maybe Curtis had a bad choice of words, making it come across as a negative comment.

Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head. There are many ways to get one's point across. Strange's natural tone has always been a dour one.

I also realize that my personal subjectivity plays a part. For example, Johnny Miller is also known for blunt criticism but his doesn't bother me, even when I disagree.

BTW, another component of this could be ESPN's instructions to its telecasters. They might have said "Tom, you play the good guy; Curtis you play the bad guy." I also note that at least twice while I was watching (including immediately after Johnson hit his shot out of bounds on Sunday) that Strange and Paul Azinger disagreed, with one practically interrupting the other to take an opposing view. Again, maybe this was done for dramatic effect. Personally I don't think they need to generate controversy/disparity. The golf shots themselves create sufficient drama, and those who are bored can change channels to more 'exciting' sports, like soccer. :)
