With considerably smaller stochastic variation ('luck') in chess compared to BG, the settling time -- time required for a player's rating to match his/her true level of ability -- is shorter. Relatedly there is a shorter time (fewer matches) required for equilibration of ratings to be reached between occasional cross-pollination of isolated populations.
