Nomenclature: Please, no "touch move"

Good answers, Havard. Often the checkers aren't properly aligned on the points and it can get confusing as to which point a particular checker actually should be located. Boards get bumped (but sometimes opponent was simply sloppy in locating the checkers during his/her last move).
My answer is the flipside question: "what harm occurs if a player touches a checker when it's his/her turn to move?" Maybe there's a legitimate reason for barring someone from touching a checker (again, when it's his/her turn). If so I'd like to hear it.
It would also be interesting/informative to hear an explanation of why the chess rule is so written (requiring a player to move a piece if s/he merely touches it).
