Nomenclature: Please, no "touch move"

It would also be interesting/informative to hear an explanation of why the chess rule is so written (requiring a player to move a piece if s/he merely touches it).

I was wondering that too. Here's my guess at an answer:

In chess you need to know when a move is definitively "over" (because there are no dice to pick up). The most natural time for your turn to be over is when you let go of the piece you just moved. (And this may have been the rule at one point.) But that led to people moving a piece and keeping their finger on it while they thought about whether it was their "final answer". This was considered unprofessional looking (and tiring), so somebody came up with the idea that if you touch a piece you must move it.
