The advantage of variance reduction is that it is unbiased. Error rate is not.

As an extreme example, imagine a tournament in which XG is entered and XG is also the bot used to calculate the error rate. It would obviously have an unfair advantage because its "error rate" will always be zero.

The same problem doesn't happen with VR.
