In Response To: Legal Moves (Re: Non-gin positions) (Stick)

We had a similar discussion a couple months back regarding a situation that came up at the Novi tournament between Jason Lee and myself. That situation was similar to Chris' example "C", where a player hallucinates a resignation in a position where the outcome is legitimately unclear. Although I personally would always give the benefit of the doubt in that situation, I recall quite a few people in that discussion were perfectly happy to say that a resignation is a resignation; in other words, if you tip your king that's the end.

I think it's a much different situation where someone resigns a position where they could conceivably save the gammon with four consecutive 6-6 or whatever. Even here, there is room for differences of opinion; some people feel like they are getting away with something if they don't at least point out to the opponent that they have a chance. Personally, I agree with you and Neil that it's better just to let them concede this type of position, particularly given the high likelihood that you'll be perceived as a jerk if you point out that they actually have a 0.001% chance.
