Rules or Etiquette

In this instance it was clearly to his benefit to be 'helpful' and this falls under etiquette, imo, but is there an actual ruling.

I suppose most times the move wouldn't get this far as someone may say "illegal" from the side at the very start of this little problem. Once we've gotten to the point where the box would like to make a ruling on whether it was legal or not to insert his checker (as there was some protesting) because at this point (by the helpful insertion) the play would be a legal play.

Incidentally, the captain just didn't see it, had a few drinks and is in his 70's. Again, in my opinion, this is etiquette but surely there is an actual ruling.
