But to return to my quibble, let's say you resign a game, failing to notice that you can save the gammon with 6-6. In that situation, it is clear (one would hope) that your intent is to resign a gammon, so I would say that your resignation is effective as soon as you announce it.

What about this example?

Two players are playing a game, contact is broken, and Player A stands up and says, "Ok I resign a gammon -- Good match."

B says, "You realize we're playing to 11 points."

A replies, "No, I thought we were playing to 9. In that case, let's play this game out."

Is the match over?
