Live variance reduction tournament

Dear Toon,
Just like you, I do enjoy the element of chance in backgammon a lot. However, if we want to make backgammon tournaments for money outside of a casino legally possible, we'll have to come up with solutions. You could think of a variance reduction tournament as the backgammon equivalent of tournament bridge, as opposed to rubber bridge.
It is true that such tournaments might discourage players that come essentially to gamble. On the other hand, such tournaments might attract more serious players that enjoy the scientific aspect of the game. In particular, stronger players should find such a tournament quite rewarding, as they'll see their study efforts rewarded with a prize more often.
