In theory, an "MWC difference" tournament is the same as a "variance reduction" tournament

In Response To: Live variance reduction tournament (Timothy Chow)

According to this post and the subsequent replies, the luck adjusted result should, in theory at least, coincide with the difference of the MWC error totals. The reason is that a player's gain or loss in MWC is entirely explained by luck and errors. More precisely, we have

gain_A = luck_A - luck_B - error_A + error_B
from which we deduce
luck_adjusted_A = gain_A - luck_A + luck_B = error_B - error_A = MWC_difference_A
The discrepancies arising in practice stem from the different ways in which these quantities are calculated -- Douglas Zare's "bot confusion".

So in theory at least, a "MWC difference" tournament is actually the same as a "variance reduction" tournament!

The question remains how to proceed in practice...
