Stick, how many tournaments have you been to and how many years have you been playing in tournaments? First, I have been involved in many situations where the rules and rulings were not clear; I have seen many others involved in these kinds of situations; and I have seen tournament directors make very poor calls that were, in my opinion, not in keeping with the intent of the rules and not fair to the players involved.
But EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO RULING, when we don't have clear ruling, we are constantly challenge to decide just how strict to be with our opponents about picking up their dice before completing a play; moving our checkers for us; missing a hit or capriciously touching or reaching for the cube; rolling the dice one at a time; picking up a cocked dice that we didn't acknowledge and wasn't sure was cocked, etc. etc. etc. Whether these come to a head in a conflict or not, the tension and ambiguity is always there, and it simply doesn't have to be that way, and it shouldn't be.
THE ONLY rational argument I have ever heard for not having more complete, clear, definitive rules is that we don't want to make the game too complex and complicated for beginners, and NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT having these kinds of rules for beginners.
I too, would rather not have a set of rules and guidelines that are 12 pages long, but I'd rather have that than have dozens of rules and procedures that are completely ambiguous and put both the players and directors in difficult positions.
