It sounds to me like you're saying that if I were originally going to play X but then saw everyone else voting for Y, then allowing myself to be swayed and switching to Y is somehow taking credit for Y if Y is right, and that's illegitimate. But I don't see why that's illegitimate, since you're also taking the blame for Y if Y is wrong.
Maybe you would argue that it takes more courage to vote "blind"? But what if you see everyone else voting for Y but go ahead and vote for X anyway (as I did with a recent OLM decision, for example)? Seems that that requires just as much independent-mindedness as voting blind.
I don't care what a person claims s/he was going to vote for initially if s/he actually votes only after reading other opinions. Any outside influence can have an effect for 99.99999% of human beings. Suppose someone is going to vote for X, then reads other posts (strongly arguing for Y) and then doesn't vote. Still bogus, IMO. You and I discussed this (regarding regular position posts, not the OLM) several weeks ago, if I recall correctly.
It probably does take more courage to knowingly go against the grain than simply voting blindly. But, IMO, the latter is more valuable to all concerned.
How hard is it to say "I wasn't sure so I checked what others had to say and then voted....?" Actually I've read several posts with similar statements -- proof that some find it doable.
