Tipping etiquette...

If and when TIPs are received at my two annual ABT events, I make it clear that they will be distributed to my staff (none to my pocket). In my 30+ years of delivering weekend backgammon tournaments, I have only once been close to going into the RED (e.g. not covering expenses on the event).
The "rakes" are part of my planning and budgeting, but of course the number of players is what drives the bottom line. We just completed the CALIFORNIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP and the total # of players was 108. With such good participation, we will be in the BLACK as far as meeting the hotel contract of dinners and room nights and deducting expenses (staff salaries included). E.G. I will make a profit.
My staff definitely get a salary AND whatever tips received. Definitely Ray Fogerlund has a long standing record of tipping the staff, and it is appreciated. Tips are not expected, but obviously welcomed. On a typical 3-day weekend tournament staff members put in between 30-35 hours each.
I know that the players are spending considerable dollars in travel, hotel, and entry fees. If an event winner wishes to tip the staff, it is a nice gesture but not expected. I do not think that tipping should be expected of any player (winners or non-winning participants).
If you think the staff did a good job and especially if you received solid service, you might consider tipping the whole group or one in particular --however, tipping is not typical and certainly not expected.
