I have never seen a team when trailing by 15 late in the game go for 2 after scoring the first catch-up TD. Just a little thought will demonstrate that it is clearly correct to go for 2 first.

I think there is a terrifying fear of 'losing early' so you are 'in the game' until the end, even though attempting the hard thing earlier often improves your prospects. It's the same kind of thing that has people kick 19 yard field goals and fail to go for it on 4th and 1.

Atlanta's Mike Smith has gone for it on 4th and 1 several notable times this year, and the failures are universally criticized. Unfortunately there is almost no upside in the court of public opinion for going for it and making it, but endless criticism when you fail, (even when it is massively correct, i.e. on their own 35 in overtime.) They need a better O-guard, however :)
