First position is obviously a pass. To understand second one look at Boot Camp position. You will be passing the cube next turn unless win by then or you cube right now. So by doubling you give him an opportunity to roll one one of his bad 9 numbers after you fail to bear off or bear off all your checkers before he gets a chance to roll. It is enlightening exercise to do all math involved yourself. So I will leave that part out. In your position if you don't hit game is over--you will be cubed out. If you hit, then most of the time you regret not doubling. If you double now and miss, game has to be played to the end and you may get another chance to hit.
