Tim: I found it useful to consider what Blue should play with a roll of 52 or 54. XGR+ seems like two down in both of these cases. Assuming this finding stands up to scrutiny, it does seem that the poor placement of a checker on the 10pt is a factor in pushing 53S ahead of 53D.

Interesting! I’ll try a few rollouts.
