I'd better clarify. If somebody rolls a 65, and accidentally moves their checker 10 pips and then I say, "That's illegal" and then they shove their checker over one pip, then I'm fine.

I'm thinking of a situation where, like this past weekend, my opponent rolled 44 and moved five of them. He was terribly confused, and we had to rewind the position all the way back to the original position. He was also terribly confused when I asked him to put the dice back, because he was then about to make a move all the way from the beginning. There's just no question in my mind that the dice should return to the board, so that there is the unambiguous ending of the play (dice get picked up).
