Purpose of clocks - an alternative to CONSIDER

I don't like the idea of adding another piece of equipment, however small and cheap, to our mix unless there's an awfully good reason for it. If you want the mechanics of a single set of dice, but don't want to make clocks mandatory, why not try this compromise instead: Clock use permitted by mutual agreement, plus no-penalty clocks on request (which in BG-speak has come to mean on demand) as long as the requester/demander can supply the clock? For the latter situation, the clocks would be set as if they were for real, but there would be no actual time pressure. You'd get the improved single-dice-pair mechanics, plus the added benefit that the both players get a good feel for how much time they burn at their normal playing speed. Most people will be pleasantly surprised when they discover that they don't flag out even when they are under no pressure to hurry. You might even find them mutually agreeing to actual clock use in their later rounds!
Other people here have posted similar ideas, but I don't remember who you are--would others think this is a good way to introduce clocks where they have not previously been used?
