borne off checker placement

Pet peeve of backgammon #2,691. When checking to see how many checkers your opponent has off you flip through the checkers off the board. It must be a lot harder than I think for people to look at the checkers on the board and subtract that from 15 to get how many are taken off.
This brings up a related issue (rule?). Should a player who has borne off checkers be required to put them where his opponent has an unobstructed view of them? If not 'required', is it polite? Good sportsmanship?
(Of course I can deduce what Stick's answer is, but surely others have opinions.)
