Paul's examples are excellent. It may also be worth reviewing the examples here and here.

The concept of slotting in front of an anchor can be extended to playing a blot/builder to the outer board. 65R-44B-31 is an apropos example, where duplication still exists but is less relevant.

Duplication certainly helps though is not necessarily pivotal. Consider the variant below (Blue's anchor is advanced from 24pt to 23pt), where Z is one of the leading candidates (if not the best play) despite the lack of duplication.
