For the rollateers: Summary and Follow-up

In Response To: For the rollateers: Stick, Nack, David, Neil, Ken, Dmitriy and others. (Taper_Mike)

I don’t want to win the most-disorganized contest, but without bragging, I must say I am ahead at the moment. That’s because I am a late entry in the game, and so far, I have no structure at all!

Money (-m), No Jacoby Rule (-n), and Quasi-money (-q)

Two thing are clear. 1. No one likes to use the -m suffix on the file names of money rollouts, and, 2. everyone keeps their money rollouts segregated from at-score rollouts.

That brings up the question of -n files (no Jacoby) and -q files (quasi-money). Do you drop those into your money folders, or do they remain segregated? (Please reply with your answser.)

Folder Structure

I would like to hear more about the folder hierarchy each of you is using for early game rollouts. (Paul, Neil & others, please join in.) Stick and David gave more detail than others, but it seems that everyone is using roll number at the top level, with AtS circumstance at the second level. Praytell, what are the rest of you doing?

If I can work out a decent folder structure, my plan is to include it in a zip file when I send out a batch of rollouts. All of my original rollouts are stored in a Taper_Mike folder. Beneath it comes a structure to be determined based on my help from you.

Stick’s Folder Structure

Stick responded with this description:
I keep all files in separate folders. I have a folder for the opening roll, for the opening roll at the major scores then broken down into dmp/gg/gs, for the opening roll at other scores up to 5a 5a, etc...
Stick’s structure closely mirrors the one he chose for BgOnline.org. At-score folders reside beside, rather than beneath, money folders. His folder hierarchy must look something like the following (Stick, please correct me if I am wrong):

  • firstmove
    • 12
    • 13
    • 14
    • ...
  • secondmove
    • 12
      • 11
      • 12
      • 13
      • ...
    • 13
      • 11
      • 12
      • 13
      • ...
    • ...
  • thirdmove
    • ...
  • ...
  • 1AtS
    • DMP
    • GG
    • GS
  • 2AtS
    • DMP
    • GG
    • GS
  • 3AtS
    • DMP
    • GG
    • GS
  • ...
  • 1Other
    • 2a3a
    • 2a4a
    • 2a5a
    • 3a1a
    • 3a2a
    • ...
  • 2Other
    • ...

David’s Folder Structure

David Rockwell responded with this description:
My organization as it now exists sorts by: 1. Roll number (1st roll, 2nd roll, etc.)
2. Score (money, DMP, etc) 3. Initial roll (& 2nd roll etc. as applicable).
His folder structure must be something like the following (David, please correct me if I am wrong):

  • 1st roll
    • DMP
      • 21
      • 31
      • 41
      • etc.
    • GG
      • ...
    • GS
      • ...
    • Money
      • ...
    • Other
      • ...
  • 2nd roll
    • DMP
      • 21$
      • 21S
      • 31P
      • 41$
      • 41S
      • 41T
      • ...
    • GG
      • ...
    • GS
      • ...
    • Money
      • ...
    • Other
      • ...
  • 3rd roll, etc.

My Thoughts

Although I have not made a final decision, I am inclined towards David’s structure, but with no spaces in any name. That way, the whole thing can be moved to the Internet or copied into a compressed file without unexpected surprises, such as the ubiquitous %20 that crops up on the Internet.

Because it seems to be the convention, I will not use -m. If there were no precedent, however, I would probably use it. Doing so allows -n (no Jacoby) and -q (quasi-money) files to mix better in the same folder with money files.

Thanks for all the input you have provided.

Mike
