survey content suggestions

I'm no expert on surveys. Here are a couple things that I think are very important, though:

1) A survey is only valuable if it gets a representative cross section of opinions. Achieving that (here) could be tough. The problem with backgammon tournament attendance is generated by those who AREN'T showing up. Is that group well represented by BGOnline posters?

2) For those still active, find out what they like (and don't like) about tournaments they attend. Find out what they like (and don't like) about tournaments they don't attend. Ask what it would take to get them to attend MORE tournaments. Ask them what it would take for them to ENCOURAGE their BG friends and acquaintances to attend some/more tournaments.

The key, IMO, is to find incentives for people to respond, and disincentives for people who want to sway public opinion before that opinion is even tallied. The latter seems to happen a bit too often here. Shouting down or trying to intimidate people who disagree with you doesn't lead to objective survey results.

A few things which could be queried:

'Convenience of location (e.g. near to airport vs. near non-bg attractions), entry fee, rake, clocks vs. no, calcuttas, food choices, distance to tournament location, availability of side events (and which side events are preferred), hotel amenities vs. cost, playing time windows, number of places paid. And always a good ploy is the catch-all question -- 'other concerns, likes, dislikes, etc.'
