I knew of the 1979 study but not the later ones. So the work of Eddington and colleagues went from highly praised (at the time of the experiment) to deeply questioned (60 years later) to vindicated & reinstated (90 years later).

Despite what textbooks tend to teach, scientific progress (and history in general) doesn't occur in a smooth, logical progression.
