Points system

Points are awarded for first, second, semi-finalists, and for first and second consolation. Each week there is a "Master's" event that fills with 16 players that starts an hour to an hour and a half earlier than the Open tournament. If you lose in the first round of the Masters, you can still enter the Open, which has consolation (Masters offers higher points and is virtually all open players every week.) Tournaments are every Tuesday night and again, draw about 40 people.
The first Sunday of each month there is a double-points events; once a year there is a club championship event with higher points; and there is an annual doubles event with higher points.
The top 6 finishers represent the club against 5 other tough clubs in Illinois for the rights to keep a huge, traveling trophy.
The top 20 players get a beautiful silver dollar encased with their placement for the year, and annual and all-time records are kept and posted on Bill's site: www.chicagopoint.com.
All of the top 20 go into a drawing for terrific prizes at the end of the year, with the top player getting his name in the hat 20 times, No. 2 19 times and so on.
To encourage new players, the first time anyone comes to play (provided they live in the area) they pay no entry fee.
The entry fee for the Masters is $20 and for the Open is $10, and there is a side pool. There is also a $5 charge which is used for food to ensure that everyone buys something from the restaurant/bar.
The venue is important: we're at a fabulous, large bar with great food, we have an area to ourselves, and I am told that the waitresses are some of the most beautiful young ladies in Chicago (I have never noticed this myself, being a happily-married man).
If you go to Bill's site you will see a fine article on his recommendations for a successful backgammon club.
