As I understand it, the word "googol" was popularized in the book, "Mathematics and the Imagination," by Edward Kasner and James Newman (1940). I have never read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979), but googling I find reference to a character, the Googleplex Star Thinker. I would think this is just a misspelling of "googol" (googolplex).
